We all know life can be compared to a game and it is no surprise that gamification is the buzzword of many sectors including education but what are the disadvantages of gamification in education?
Recently I had to interest a child in mathematics.
This was difficult as the child simply could not see the point of mathematics
Once I made it into a game, he was very interested in the game.
So far so good, his interest came up and mathematics was much easier, or so it seemed.
We can get the learner to learn things he doesn’t want to know or doesn’t understand by making it into a game.
We can bypass all his “survival” responses to play something he can’t get the point or value of.
We can also educate our children into a future that will never exist, in fact this is what is or has been happening for some years now and it is often commented on.
Therefore education really needs to focus on the “now” of a child, educate him to deal with the here and now, give him the certainty that he can deal with the moment he is in.
Education for tomorrow is fine in but not as the main point of attention… (assuming what we teach is of use.)
We observe that children do know exactly what they need right here and now, adults frequently don’t.
Now going back to mathematics, I have seen a tonne of online/offline resources but the one point of making mathematics real or usable to the individual (virtually) none.
Montessori is the only methodology I know of that uses weights, scales, volumes, etc. to make things real to the learner.
It is important to know at a glance how heavy a kilogram or how long an inch is otherwise what meaning does the entirety of mathematics have to him bar some symbols? – ZERO.
Mathematics is about quantities but if we can’t relate those quantities to our actual day-to-day living, what is the point of it all? –
All we can use mathematics for is making sure we don’t get shortchanged??? 1000s of hours on billions of people wasted, here is some waste of gigantic proportions, no?
Gamification is fine but has it’s disadvantages, it has to relate to the present time and used to solve problems in the real world.
